Reduce PDF file size — what changes

“Reduce PDF file size” sounds like one button. In practice, size comes from fonts, vector drawing, embedded images, and how objects are packed. LocalPdfCompress changes packing and page structure with pdf-lib. It does not re-encode page images. This guide says what you should expect when you press Compress on the home tool.

What structural rewrite does

That can remove some unused object chatter and change how streams are stored. Gains are often modest. They are real when they appear — and the UI shows the numbers so you are not guessing.

What it does not change

If most of the bytes are large bitmaps, structural rewrite alone usually will not cut the file in half. That is why the limits guide exists: honest PDF compressor limits.

Reduce PDF file size without upload — practical loop

Keep the original beside the download until you decide. Soft guidance is about 25 MiB for the input. Prefer a laptop near that size. Steps that stay local:

  1. Note the before size on the meta line.
  2. Run Compress and read after + delta.
  3. Open the download and check page count and a few pages.
  4. If after is larger, discard it. Growing is a valid outcome for this engine.
  5. If signatures or bookmarks matter, inspect those separately — page copy does not guarantee them.
  6. Optional: try the other rewrite mode once. Metadata strip rarely saves megabytes; it clears Info fields.

Email attachments and “still too big”

Many people reduce PDF file size so a mail host accepts the attachment. Local rewrite helps when packing was the problem. It does not invent a typed megabyte guarantee. If after is still too large, options outside this MVP include removing pages you do not need (elsewhere), regenerating from a lower-DPI scan, or using a tool that explicitly downsamples images. LocalPdfCompress will not do those jobs quietly in the background.

Compress PDF vs ZIP for size

ZIP can shrink some PDFs slightly by wrapping them, but recipients must unzip, and many mail filters treat ZIPs differently. Structural rewrite keeps a single .pdf. Neither replaces image downsampling. Choose ZIP for bundling many files; choose rewrite when you need one PDF and packing might help. Home-page note covers the same distinction without a second product.

Privacy while you experiment

Trying multiple modes still stays in the tab. Reloading clears memory. We do not keep a history of sizes or filenames. Confirm with trust and why local compress matters. Soft ~25 MiB guidance is about memory, not a cloud quota. Encrypted PDFs may be rejected — unlock a copy you are allowed to open before retrying.

What “reduce PDF file size” means across tools

Desktop preflight tools may subset fonts, discard unused objects, and re-encode images at a chosen DPI. Server upload compressors often apply a proprietary binary pass. Browser print-to-PDF at a lower quality setting rasterizes pages. LocalPdfCompress sits in a narrower box: pdf-lib page copy + object streams + optional Info strip, entirely in the tab, soft ~25 MiB guidance, no password bypass.

That narrower box is why before/after can disappoint — and why the UI shows numbers instead of a fake “optimized!” badge. When you need stronger shrink and policy allows a different tool, use one that names image downsampling explicitly. When you need no upload during the process step, stay here and keep the smaller file.

Checklist before you call the result “done”

Sources of size you can see without opening a hex editor

Large page count with tiny text exports can still be modest on disk. A three-page scan can be huge. The meta line’s page count plus before size is enough to guess whether images dominate. Structural rewrite helps packing; it does not change that guess into a guarantee. Soft ~25 MiB still applies. See also limits and no-upload steps.

When to stop iterating

Two rewrite modes are enough. If both grow or save only kilobytes on an image-heavy file, stop. Further clicks will not invent downsampling. Keep the original, or move to a tool that names raster recompress. Soft ~25 MiB, no password bypass, and no typed email target remain true on every retry. Contact for wording mistakes only — contact — never attach the PDF.

FAQ

Why did my PDF get larger after compress?

Object streams and page copy can change packing. If the original was already lean, the rewrite may grow. Keep the original when after ≥ before.

Does metadata strip reduce size a lot?

Usually only a little. Info fields are small compared with embedded images. Strip is for clearing common metadata, not for mega-byte savings.

Can I set a target file size?

No. This version does not take a megabyte target. It shows measured before/after sizes after a rewrite.

Are fonts subsetted again?

The tool copies pages with pdf-lib. It does not advertise a separate font-subsetting pipeline. Do not expect desktop-preflight font savings.

Is this the same as print-to-PDF at lower DPI?

No. Print-to-PDF rasterizes. This tool keeps vector page content when present and does not downsample images.

Will ZIP shrink my PDF more than this tool?

Sometimes ZIP wraps slightly smaller; often it barely helps already-compressed streams. ZIP also changes the delivery format. Compare both if you care, and keep recipient UX in mind.

Where is the size comparison shown?

On the home tool, under the action buttons, after a successful Compress run.
